Program Overview

Part of the Graduate School and the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, the Department of Communication boasts nationally and internationally renowned full-time faculty members with multi-methodological expertise across three intersecting areas of communication research: media and technology; culture and relationships; and crisis, risk and health.

The Ph.D. in Communication offers advanced study in human communication, tailored to fit student goals. We also offer a dual-title Ph.D. in Communication and Urban Sustainability. This interdisciplinary degree is designed to prepare researchers and professionals to solve challenging urban problems that require working across disciplines.

The Master of Arts in Communication offers concentrations in Communication Studies, Journalism, Media Arts & Studies, and Public Relations & Organizational Communication (both in-person and a completely online version).

Graduate Certificate programs offer students the option to gain expertise in Communication and New Media, Risk and Crisis, and Health Communication.

To accommodate busy professionals, courses are offered in the evening at our main campus in Midtown Detroit.
