Scholarships

The Department of Communication has many scholarships available for our majors. Students can learn more about specific scholarships and apply through ScholarshipUniverse. Students can also explore other funding opportunities through Wayne State's Financial Aid office.

  • A prompt will appear for you to fill out your personal information. Fill out the form and click save. 
  • Click the "Scholarships" button on the left side of the page to view and apply for scholarships that you may be eligible for.

The ScholarshipUniverse application is currently open and accepting applications.

 

Please note: Institutional funds such as the Warrior, Gold or Wayne State Promise awards have been funded in part by this scholarship offer. These awards may replace or reduce these funds or other institutional dollars. In addition, the sum of all aid cannot exceed the financial aid cost of attendance.

Any major in the Department of Communication

E. Ray Skinner Scholarship Fund for Communication

Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to full or part-time undergraduate or graduate students majoring in the Department Communication. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. CFPCA will select recipients (which is delegated to the Department of Communication which is a delegated duty to the Scholarship Committee).

 

Eunice and Ed J. Pappas Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Communication

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students entering their senior year majoring in the Department of Communication. Applications must have a minimum 3.0 major GPA. Award may be used for tuition only. The Department of Communication selects recipients (which is a delegated duty to the Scholarship Committee).

 

Steven Plochocki Endowed Scholarship in Communication

Applicants must be full or part-time graduate or undergraduate students majoring in the Department of Communication. Applications must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Award may be used for tuition only. The Department of Communication selects recipients (which is a delegated duty to the Scholarship Committee).

 

Communication Studies (Undergraduate)

Jane Fitzgibbon Endowed Student Award

Applicants must be full or part-time junior or senior undergraduate students majoring in Communication with a minimum major GPA of 3.25. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. The Department of Communication Scholarship Committee will select recipients.

 

Public Relations (Undergraduate)

Berg Muirhead Scholarship in Public Relations Student Advancement

Applicants must be full or part-time undergraduate students at the sophomore level or higher, majoring in Public Relations. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. The chair selects recipients (which is a delegated duty to the Scholarship Committee to make the recommendations to the chair).

 

Jeannine Gregory Memorial Leadership Award

Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to full-time undergraduate students majoring in Communication and Public Relations. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. Department of Communication will select recipients (which is a delegated duty to the Scholarship Committee).

 

Michael and Judy Layne Annual Scholarship

Applicants must have a minimum 2.8 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to full or part-time undergraduate students majoring in Public Relations. Second preference will be given to students majoring in Journalism or Communication. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Award may be used for tuition only. Department of Communication will select recipients (which is a delegated duty to the Scholarship Committee).

 

Renee M Abraham-Harries Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Public Relations

Applicants must be full or part-time students entering their junior or senior year of study having declared Public Relations as the major course of study. Applicants must demonstrate excellence and/or ability to make a meaningful contribution in the area of public relations. Committee of department faculty (which is delegated to the Scholarship Committee) and professional practitioners, appointed by the chair, will recommend student or students qualified for the award.

 

Journalism (Undergraduate)

The Automotive Press Association Al Vinikour Journalism Scholarship

Applicants must be full-time students majoring in Journalism with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. Committee comprised of CFPCA scholarship committee (this is delegated to the department, which I have delegated to the Scholarship Committee)

 

Ben Burns Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Journalism

Applicants must be full- or part-time Journalism majors who have completed their junior year and entering their senior year. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses including technology and supplies. CFPCA, the Dept of Communication (these former two are delegated to the Scholarship Committee), and Beverly Burns (or a member of the Burns family) will select recipients.

 

Michael Freedman Endowed Scholarship in Journalism

Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate majoring in Journalism with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. Department of Communication will select recipients (which is a delegated duty to the Scholarship Committee).

 

Armand and Eleanor Gebert Endowed Scholarship

Applicants must be majoring in Journalism with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. Journalism faculty select recipients.

 

George and Mabel Slocum Foundation Scholarship

Applicants must be full-time students majoring in Journalism who demonstrate financial need. Recipients will be selected by Financial Aid (which is delegated to the Department of Communication Scholarship Committee).

 

Robert W. and Louise A. Giles Broadcast Journalism Endowed Scholarship

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students majoring in Broadcast Journalism with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must demonstrate financial need. Award may be used for tuition only. Department of Communication Scholarship Committee will select recipients.

 

Mike McCormick Goodfellows Annual Scholarship

Preference given to applicants who are full-time or part-time members of the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity. Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and demonstrate financial need. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. Journalism faculty select recipients.

 

Robert Grandison McGruder Endowed Scholarship

Applicants must be a full-time or part-time member of the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity majoring in Journalism. Applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and submit a 1000-word essay on the importance of diversity in the media. Area Head of Journalism, a representative of the Free Press and Director of JIM make the recommendations of recipients.

 

Joyce Skinner Endowed Journalism Scholarship

Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to Detroit public high school graduates who are full or part-time undergraduate students majoring in Journalism. Award may be used for tuition and books. Recipients will be selected by Financial Aid (which is delegated to the Department of Communication Scholarship Committee).

 

Spirit of Diversity in Journalism Endowed Award

Applicants must be full-time or part-time students majoring in Journalism with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants must submit a list of their involvement in community service and a 1000-word essay on diversity in the media. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. The chair and two journalism faculty appointed by the journalism area head (delegated to the two journalism faculty on the Scholarship Committee) will select recipients.

 

W. Sprague Holden Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students enrolled or newly admitted in the Department of Communication majoring in Journalism. Financial need may be considered. Preference will be given to students enrolled full-time. Award may be used for tuition only. Selected by the journalism area head and recommended to the chair.

 

WXYZ/Scripps Howard Foundation Endowed Scholarship

Applicants must be enrolled in the Journalism Program with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicants must submit a resume, clips or audio or video file and a 500-750 word essay on the importance of diversity in the mass media. Award may be used for tuition and books. Selected by journalism faculty.

 

Graduate Program

Winifred Clephane Endowed Graduate Scholarship in Communication

Applicants must be pursuing a master's degree in the Department of Communication and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to working professionals. Award may be used for tuition or other educational expenses. The Department will select recipients (this is delegated to the Graduate Committee).

 

Loepp Family Endowed Scholarship

Applicants must be full-time or part-time students pursing a master's degree in the Department of Communication and demonstrate financial need. A minimum 3.5 GPA is required. Award may be used for tuition and books. Department of Communication Scholarship Committee will select recipients (which is a delegated duty to the Scholarship Committee who delegates it to the Graduate Committee).
