Student Spotlight: Mya Smith
Name: Mya Smith
Major: Public Relations
Expected Graduation: Spring 2025
I came to Wayne State University in 2021 with an undecided major. It wasn’t until my first communication class, COM 1010, that I fell in love with research, people, and talking. I changed my major to public relations and never looked back!
I chose PR because it allows me to work in diverse fields and gain unique experiences. During my sophomore year of college, I got my first internship at The Fulkerson Group, a sales and fulfillment agency that works with Detroit's premiere events to make them successful.
At the Fulkerson Group, I worked on many projects, including the Detroit Jazz Festival. This year, I had the honor of creating a pin to honor the legacy of the late Gretchen C. Valade. The pin represents her spirit of giving to the jazz community and inspires others to help perpetuate art in Detroit.
Helping the community and being involved are significant core values of mine. I am the co-president of our Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and president of our Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) chapter. During the past academic year, I was also a Dean's Delegate.
As my time here ends, I can't imagine having spent the past four years anywhere else.
