The Hellenic Museum of Michigan shows pride of Metro Detroit's Greeks

by Lauren Abdel-Razzaq

The Hellenic Museum of Michigan, located at 67 East Kirby Street right across from the Detroit Institute of Arts, officially opened its doors to the public Saturday with a flurry of guests exploring the beautifully restored two-story home that will now serve as a focal point of history for Metro Detroit Greeks. "This has been a dream of the Greek community for a long time," said museum president Ernie Zachary. "It's something that we've all hoped for. It's something that community has always wanted, a building with their history and culture and a way to share that with the world." Wayne State University, the campus where the museum is located, has played a big role in helping the museum get started. "It will bring life into this area, a little ethnic pride," said Edward Pappas, professor emeritus at the university. "To have a museum that celebrates our heritage is so exciting. We can bring our kids and grandkids here and show them who they are." The once vacant building will be home to artifacts, family treasurers and historical documents highlighting the history of the Greek community.
