Student filmmakers collaborate on 'Downriver'

Downriver is the latest cinematic endeavor from the Michigan Creative Film Alliance (MCFA). The project brings together film students and recent graduates from Wayne State University, Michigan State University and University of Michigan each year to work on a film. The MCFA is in its third year and will showcase Downriver at the Detroit Institute of Arts in the spring; after that, it will be entered into film festivals.

Filmmakers from the Michigan Creative Film Alliance, a collaboration of current and former students in the film programs at Wayne State University, University of Michigan and Michigan State University, are shooting scenes in and around Wyandotte, MI, through August 10, toward their third annual, 2012-13, production titled Downriver. Each summer, the alliance brings together top film students and recent graduates from the three schools to share their expertise as members of a production team dedicated to making a high-quality film, employing real-world professional standards and practices.

"Young Michigan filmmakers undeterred by incentive cuts"

For the third year, the Michigan Creative Film Alliance (MiCFA), a collaborative of current and former students and faculty from film programs at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University, is making a movie. This year, however, the team is raising the final part of its $37,919 budget -- $12,500 -- on Kickstarter, the crowd fund-raising website. Michigan's film students saw their futures changed when the state's popular film incentives were downsized last year from 42 percent of a production's expenditures in the state to a portion of a pot totaling $25 million. This year, the state doubled that pot to $50 million. It was half of the total incentives paid in 2010, but a step forward. WWJ-AM also ran a report on the MiCFA project.

The students of the Michigan Creative Film Alliance (MiCFA) have launched their first major fundraising campaign on Kickstarter, an online funding platform for creative projects. Their goal is to raise at least $12,500 by Sunday, July 29, to fund location production costs associated with their 2012 production, "Downriver." Each summer, the MiCFA brings together top students and recent graduates from the film-related programs at Wayne State University, Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. These students share their expertise as members of a production team dedicated to making a high-quality film, employing real-world professional standards and practices.
