WSU journalism program receives $1,000 donation from WXYZ-TV/Channel 7...

The Wayne State University Department of Communication's journalism program is the recipient of a $1,000 donation from Detroit's WXYZ-TV/Channel 7. The donation will be awarded as a scholarship to a student majoring in broadcast journalism.

The donation originated as the cash prize of the 2013 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, regarded as the highest award in broadcast journalism, which was won January 22 by WXYZ News for its years-long investigative series Wayne County Confidential: Government Run Amok.

"On behalf of everyone at WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 it is a great honor and privilege to donate $1,000 to a deserving student in the Wayne State University journalism program," said WXYZ VP and General Manager, Ed Fernandez. "As a longtime donor of WSU's journalism program, especially its Journalism Institute for Media Diversity, we hope this will help someone continue their important academic career. WXYZ-TV and the E.W. Scripps Company are committed to furthering excellence in journalism and are proud to contribute to the success of Wayne State's outstanding program."
