Rep. Hansen Clarke shows up, but candidates' forum goes on without him

News reports give an overview of public debates held Thursday at Wayne State University for candidates running in the 13th and 14th Congressional Districts. U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke, who said he'd quit debates to avoid what he called the "racist rhetoric of fellow candidates," made a surprise appearance at last night's forum.

Debates for Congressional hopefuls are set

Public debates for candidates running in the 13th and 14th Congressional Districts will be held Thursday at Wayne State University's Spencer M. Partrich Law School Auditorium. The forums are hosted by the Detroit chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists and WSU's Journalism Institute for Media Diversity.

Candidates' Debates - 13th & 14th Congressional District
Thursday, July 26
Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium - WSU Law School

Wayne State's Journalism Institute for Media Diversity and the Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists host a debate for the newly drawn 13th and 14th congressional district candidates. Moderated by prominent local professional journalists, the event takes place July 26 at 6 p.m. in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium of the Law School:

13th Congressional District Debate = 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
14th Congressional District Debate = 8:00 - 9:00 p.m.

The 13th Congressional District Debate begins at 6:30p.m. Participating candidates are: Glenn Anderson, John Gocci and Bert Johnson.
The 14th Congressional District Debate begins at 8 p.m. with John Hauler, Bob Costello, Brenda Lawrence, Gary Peters and Mary Waters.

The debates will be moderated by Vickie Thomas,City Beat Reporter, WWJ Newsradio 950 (CBS) and DC-NABJ President.

A panel of four journalists for each debate will be made up from the following:

- Oralandar Brand Williams, Reporter, The Detroit News & DC-NABJ Vice President for Print
- Alexis Wiley, Reporter, Fox 2 News
- Andrew Humphrey, Meteorologist and Reporter, WDIV Local 4 (NBC)

- Lloyd Jackson, Assistant News Director, WJR Radio 760 & DC NABJ VP for Broadcast
-Chuck Stokes, Editorial Director, WXYZ TV-7 (ABC)
-Bankole Thompson, Editor, The Michigan Chronicle
