ANN ARBOR: Banned Book Week to include visit from Mariela Griffor

The 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week, Sept. 30 through Oct. 6, will include a visit from poet and publisher Mariela Griffor from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at the downtown branch of the library in Ann Arbor. The author will read from her work and discuss her extraordinary life, including her involuntary exile from her native Chile, which forms a framework for much of her poetry. The author of "Exiliana" (2007) and "House" (2007), Griffor is the honorary consul of Chile in Michigan and founder of Michigan's Marick Press, a not-for-profit literary publisher, founded to preserve the best work by poets of the American Midwest, including many women poets. She is co-founder of The Institute for Creative Writers at Wayne State University, and her work has appeared in periodicals across Latin America and the United States. Griffor holds a 2003 bachelor's degree in journalism from Wayne State University.
