by Jessica Palmer

Daily News Managing Editor Duane Barbati received the 2014 Alumni of the Year award from Wayne State University's journalism program. Barbati traveled to Detroit to accept the award on Oct. 15. Director of journalism at Wayne State Jack Lessenberry nominated Barbati for this prestigious award. "This is a big deal at Wayne State," Lessenberry said. "The award is given to alumni who have gone out in the world and done very well for themselves." Lessenberry expressed pride in the accomplishments of his former student both for his work while he was in college and since he has left. "He (Barbati) was a diligent and methodical student, and he's carried that with him," he said. Lessenberry said Barbati was competing with five other Wayne State alumni who had been nominated for the award. "He was the consensus. It was no contest really. Duane represents the best of the best," he said.
