Students transform Chevy Malibu for EcoCAR 2 competition
by Robin Schwartz

A high-pressure competition is underway right now at the GM proving grounds in Milford. Industry experts are testing and examining eco cars, which are engineered by college students in Michigan and across North America. EcoCAR 2 project manager Idan Kovent took FOX 2's Robin Schwartz for a ride in Wayne State's eco car, E2D2. The car started as a donated 2013 Chevy Malibu. Now, it's a gasoline electric hybrid that runs on a battery and E85. Over the last three years, a team of 40 students worked to reduce the car's environmental impact as part of the EcoCAR 2 challenge, improving fuel efficiency and cutting emissions while retaining the vehicle's performance and customer appeal. We had to tear apart a lot of the pieces of the original vehicle and redesign them, rebuild them, install a lot of bigger electric components," says Kovent. The car is now a full hybrid that can drive 40 to 50 miles on electricity alone. The competition goes until June 12. Once they wrap up in Milford the teams will spend a week in Washington, D.C. presenting their work.

EcoCAR 3 Teams and Vehicle Announced: Wayne State Michigan's only university selected

Wayne State was one of 16 North American universities selected by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors as part of itsEcoCAR 3 competition. EcoCAR 3 is a four-year competition that will launch in spring 2014 and will conclude in summer 2018. The four-year Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) is challenging students to rebuild the Chevrolet Camaro to squeeze even more fuel efficiency out of it and reduce the emissions, all while keeping muscle car fanatics satisfied.

"Engineering boot camp"
by Katie O'Neal

Wayne State University's EcoCAR 2 team, made up of 40 students, is re-engineering a Chevy Malibu into a vehicle that achieves 40 miles of all-electric range. The team members joined students from across the country who were challenged to reduce greenhouse gases through a General Motors and U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored competition, EcoCAR 2: Plugging into the Future. Wayne State is one of 15 universities competing in the three-year engineering competition. The competition, to replicate GM's three-year design process, challenges engineering students to simulate a hybrid vehicle design and then implement it into the team's GM-donated 2014 Chevrolet Malibu. Additionally, business and communication students on the team secure publicity and sponsorships and plan outreach events.
