Communication alum Rebecca Harris '02 discusses social media best practices...

The Spice It Up! Technology Conference for teachers in the Walled Lake, Mich. school district is an opportunity for educators to familiarize themselves with the latest technology tools. This year's keynote speaker, Dr. Rebecca Harris, Wayne State '02, from the GM Social Media team, offered them an overview on how social media can help them communicate with students and parents, while making them more effective in the classroom. Some of the guidelines Rebecca offered:
- Be transparent online. Identify who you are and what you do.
- Think twice, post once. If you have something you're not sure you should share with others, seek advice from your co-workers or supervisors.
- What's online is permanent. What we say today will definitely be here tomorrow.
- Be nice. When talking to others, especially on behalf of your job, be kind and listen to all sides.
- Ask for help. If you see a discussion related to do something you do or work with, reach out to your supervisor for guidance on how best to handle on behalf of the company.
- Be in the know. Make sure you're aware of your organization's social media policy and what's acceptable and what's not.
