Paige Sickmiller goes pro in basketball

By Jerry Fraeyman

Paige Sickmiller recently signed a contract to play professional basketball in Europe. The contract comes after a knee injury forced Sickmiller to miss nearly her entire senior season at Wayne State University. "It was my first serious injury, so it was pretty devastating," she said about the torn ACL, MCL and meniscus that occurred in January 2013, nine games into the season. "The fact that it cut my final year short made it worse. I wasn't supposed to go out like that." At the time, Sickmiller was WSU's leading scorer and had made 61 consecutive starts. Undaunted, she persevered, undergoing rehabilitation while assisting the team from the sidelines as the Warriors advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II tournament. Sickmiller leaves Aug. 1 to play for Barmer Turn-Verein in Wuppertaal, Germany.

Romeo's Sickmiller ready to turn page on pro career

By Joe Abramson

Paige Sickmiller has become the first WSU women's basketball player to sign a pro contract, inking a deal to play for Barmer Turn-Verein in Wuppertaal, Germany. While at Wayne State, she started 59 of 80 games and finished among the top ten three-point shooters in the school's history. She also represented the USA in an international tournament in Italy the summer before her senior season. "She sets such high standards for herself and understands what it takes," WSU coach Carrie Lohr said. "She is so driven and is such a focused young lady." Sickmiller leaves for Germany in early August and will be there until March except for a break in December when she gets to come back home for a couple weeks.
