Jake Nickell is a PhD candidate in the communication studies program. His scholarly interests pertain to rhetorical criticism and his research is concerned with representations of deviance and the construction of identity in popular culture. Much of this work is based upon critical theory, operating from Neo-Marxist and feminist perspectives. Jake is interested in all types of popular culture texts, including music, film and news media, but is primarily focused on video games and gamic criticism. He also teaches the basic communication course (COM 1010), Argumentation and Debate (COM 2110), Persuasive Speaking (COM 2170), and Theories in Communication (COM 3400).
