Dr. Kinney's research focuses broadly on verbal aggression, message design elements, and stress and well-being. He has published in Human Communication Research, Communication Monographs, Journal of Social Psychology, Motivation & Emotion, Communication Research, and Academic Emergency Medicine. Dr. Kinney’s current research interests include projects that examine how being teased and bullied at school lead to intellectual deficits, how sexual coercion functions and manifests within intimate contexts, and how racist speech prompts hostility and psychosomatic illnesses. Dr. Kinney teaches classes in persuasion, social influence, social marketing, and interpersonal communication.
