JIM
The
Journalism Institute for Media Diversity was founded in 1984 at Wayne
State University by the Department of Communication and editors
of The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press. Both newspapers
are key supporters as are other metro Detroit newspapers, media outlets
and radio and television stations.
More than 160 JIM graduates have launched professional careers at
metro dailies, radio and TV stations, public relations firms
and other media organizations across the nation. Some graduates
have moved on to careers in law, politics, civic and charitable
organizations, and as award winning authors and documentary producers.
In
a diverse democracy, it is important that all voices are heard,
no matter their creed, color, race, ethnicity or gender orientation.
JIM graduates help to diversify the media and serve as an alumni
network for those beginning professional careers.
The
institute provides a strong academic and professional climate for
undergraduates. Members of racial, ethnic and other underrepresented
groups are particularly urged to apply as are those interested in
studying the importance of diversity in the nation's media to this
country's future well being. Applicants must have a superior scholastic
record as well as a record of involvement in extra-curricular activities
and community service. Institute members must maintain a 3.0 average
on a 4.0 scale.
JIM
is a unique program designed to prepare the best and brightest students
for careers in communication.
