Aim Higher

Internships

If you are a journalism major, at least one internship is required. If you are a public relations major or are studying for a career in radio or television, internships are highly recommended. The Department of Communication has carefully designed the sequence of classes to teach the professional skills needed for success in all communication-oriented careers. But to sharpen your skills and to build your resume and portfolio, you need to practice these skills by constantly seeking professional experience as an intern and/or freelancer.

One internship may be required, but additional experience is always helpful in building career skills. Students have held internships with major Detroit area newspapers, television and radio stations, communication agencies, corporations and nonprofit organizations.

The journalism program office has a list of opportunities; others are posted on the bulletin board outside the journalism office front doors and you may be aware of still other opportunities that are passed on by word of mouth. Up to two internships can be taken for course credit.

All students must first meet with the Journalism Internship Coordinator before starting any internship search.

For more information on any of the available internships, see the internship book in the Journalism office or contact the internship coordinator.

NOTE:  There may be more internships than listed here - see Jack Lessenberry. Additionally, you may be able to find another internship on your own that may be approved.
