Journalism

Career Opportunities: A major in Journalism prepares students for a variety of careers such as advertising, news editorial writing, broadcasting or media relations. Students who have completed this major are employed in fields such as reporting, editing, publishing, public relations, advertising, newspaper, television and radio, corporate publications, writing training programs, screenwriting and writing books. News writing and editing courses are taught in professional type newsrooms and the faculty all have professional journalistic experience as well as academic credentials.

Broadcast Journalism

Career Opportunities: A major in Broadcast Journalism prepares students for a variety of careers. Broadcast Journalism majors are employed in fields such as broadcasting, reporting, public relations, advertising, newspaper, television and radio, newsletters and corporate publications, writing training programs, screenwriting and writing books.

 
 

 

Communication Studies

Career Opportunities: Employers in business, government, and education identify excellent communication skills as  the most important quality they desire in hiring employees. Communication Studies majors find careers in many different fields, including business, government, education, law and religion.

 
 

 

Media Arts and  Studies

Career Opportunities: Media Arts and Studies majors use studios and post production facilities created exclusively for the Department of Communication. They have access to a wide range of courses in the department. Wayne State University is located in the heart of a large metropolitan area, there are outstanding opportunities for students to know and work with Detroit radio stations, television stations, cable and industrial video production companies.

 
 

 

Film

Career Opportunities: Students who major in film may be preparing for careers as film teachers, film librarians and archivist, film critics, script writers, or workers in film production. Additional study at the graduate level is usually required to achieve these goals.

 

 
 

Public Relations

Career Opportunities: Students selecting this major typically seek employment in one of the many career opportunities in public relations: business and industry; non-profit organizations;  trade associations; government service; education; or account executive positions in an agency. Some students later pursue graduate-level study in fields such as  organizational communication.

Important Reminders

Every course required to complete an undergraduate major in the College of Fine Performing & Communication Arts must be completed with a grade of "C" (2.0) or better. This includes all transfer credit that may be applicable to the major programs. All students pursuing this major must complete the university's general education and competency requirements as well as the college's group requirements, which include completion of a foreign language through the third semester.
