Alums support Comm Studies Day

On April 8, 2009, the Department of Communication presented Communication Studies Day, special presentations for students, by alumni, on the topic of what you can do with a degree in communication studies. The event's featured guest speakers were communication alums Joe Lopata, Hollie Tanguay and Tara Tomcsik.

Joe Lopata is a recent graduate and is studying for a masters in business administration at WSU. He is a marketing coordinator in WSU's Office of Marketing and Communications. He is a transplant from the west side living in Harper Woods with his wife and daughter.

Hollie Tanguay J.D. is a licensed attorney in the state of Michigan who is currently staying home to take care of her two young boys. Hollie's legal interests are in immigration and she clerked for an immigration law firm post law school. Hollie earned her J.D. in 2005 from Valparaiso University School of Law. She was a three year member and vice president of the Student Bar Association where she represented the student body and planned the school's various academic and social events. While in law school, Hollie had the honor of interning with Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Chicago. Additionally, while in law school Hollie was a two year member of Jessup Moot Court. While at Wayne State, she was a member of the debate team.

Tara Tomcsik has always been a hands on person in the communication field. She started off in music and theatre. "I sang my way through most of my life and was able to live in various locations around the world," Tomcsik said. "I lived in Alaska, Hawaii, California, New York City, on an Amish Farm in Indiana, Greece, Switzerland, the Netherlands and of course Michigan." She's been on stage in Michigan Regional Theatres and on Broadway. She performed on ABC Daytime's All My Children and taught part time at the New York City School of Trapeze. She interned with WJBK-TV Detroit's FOX-2 news and was able to become a part of the political writing team in an election year. She's a member of Women in Communications. She currently is director of catering sales at the Embassy Suites in Troy and lives in Northville, MI. With a degree in communication and peace and conflict studies, Tomcsik is a proud alumna of Wayne State.
